A Brief History of Fitness

Human reliance and the pursuit of fitness dates back to the beginning of our existence. Throughout prehistoric time, man's quest for fitness has been driven by a desire to survive through hunting and gathering. Teachings in ancient China and India emphasized and encouraged participation in regular physical activity to maintain an healthy mind body balance; martial arts and Yoga evoled during this time. During Babylonian times Middle Eastern countries such as Persia , Syria and Egypt realized the correlation between proper fitness with military performance. Perhaps no other civilization has held fitness in such high regard as ancient Greece . The Greeks believed development of the body was equally as important as development of the mind. In Roman times it was imperative for citizens of the empire to remain in good physical fitness as they were eligible for military duty up until the twilight of their lives. The Renaissance which was time period which exhibited a renewed interest in the human body. Once again, the ancient Greek ideals, which glorified the human body, gained widespread acceptance. In our own country the hardships of colonial life ensured that regular physical activity continued to be a lifestyle priority; plowing the land for crops, hunting for food, and herding cattle coupled with the need to explore and colonize. One of the most important events with respect to modern fitness in the United States was the Industrial Revolution, where we saw significant advancement in industrial and mechanical technologies which replaced labor-intensive jobs. During this timeframe we saw a significant shift from rural to urban lifestyles which was accompanied by a decrease in physical activity.

It appears that as societies become too enamored with wealth, prosperity and self-entertainment that fitness levels drop. In addition, as technology has advanced with man, the levels of physical fitness have decreased.  Sedentary lifestyles have been a major contributing factor to the alarming levels of obesity experienced worldwide. The lifestyle changes apparently come with an unwanted and alarming cost to health as we recognize cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Type II diabetes as the leading causes of disease and death. Present day fitness is arguably as important to man's survival today as it was to prehistoric man.

A Brief History of Massage

Massage is considered to be among the oldest of all treatments used by man. Chinese records dating back 3,000 years documented its use. The ancient Hindus, Persians, and Egyptians used forms of massage for some ailments, and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems.

You might think of a massage as a luxury found in exotic spas and upscale health clubs. Today, massage is an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs and has proven beneficial to many chronic conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, and bursitis. Massage helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living. During a massage, a therapist manipulates your body's soft tissues — your muscles, skin and tendons — using his or her fingertips, hands and fists. Several versions of massage exist, and they're performed in a variety of settings.
